Cofounder/President
Samuel Garcia Jr., Ph.D. is an educator, community leader, and proud Mercedes High School graduate. He holds degrees from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Texas State University, with a career that spans NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, K-12 and higher education, and grassroots initiatives. Inspired by the legacy of author Dr. Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, he co-founded Creative BITS to spark literacy, storytelling, and sustainability among youth. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, sports, exploring nature, and spending time with his daughter Sofía.
Program Coordinator
Marisol Vidales, is a Graduate of the University of North Texas with a Master’s in Library Science. In addition, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from St. Mary’s University. Mrs. Vidales has been in the library field for over 19 years and served as a Children’s Librarian and Branch Manager before obtaining a position as a Library Director. Mrs. Vidales is presently the Library Director for Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Library in Mercedes, Texas. She is also the Vice-President of the Hidalgo County Library System which represents all 14 public libraries in Hidalgo. Mrs. Vidales leadership, experience and love of her community make her a valuable asset to our Board.
Cofounder/Vice-President
Rebecca Sova serves as the Vice-President and Co-founder of Creative BITS. She is currently bringing together her experience from past cultural projects to reignite the literary heritage and potential of her hometown. She has a Bachelor’s in Sociology from Texas A&M University in College Station. She worked in higher education as an advisor working with first-gen and Hispanic students. She is an alumni of Mercedes High School, where she was able to work with Dr. Garcia (Co-founder) on community-based projects that encouraged Hispanic youth to engage in their communities. It was through this organization that they interviewed and reintroduced Dr. Rolando Hinojosa-Smith in his hometown community in 2012.
Treasurer
Josh Cook serves as Treasurer for Creative BITS, where he applies his economics background, financial acumen, and data analysis expertise to support the organization. With a double major in Psychology and Economics from Texas A&M University and a Master’s in Psychology from Sam Houston State University, Josh brings both analytical rigor and a deep understanding of human development to the board. Inspired by Dr. Rolando Hinojosa-Smith’s legacy, Josh is committed to ensuring Creative BITS has the financial foundation and strategic oversight needed to empower individuals across the Rio Grande Valley.
