As part of our mission to inspire students to share their stories, we worked with the City of Mercedes and the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Library in order to host a creative writing workshop. The board here at Creative Bits felt that hosting a summer workshop, in conjunction with the local city and library, would not only encourage local students to engage in unique creative works, but it would also be a great way to honor the oeuvre of Rolando Hinojosa Smith. Our Program Coordinator, Marisol Vidales, planned the logistics of the event, ensuring that our speaker, Rosa Esthela Mora, would be able to freely work with students in a personal and impactful way.

Rosa Esthela Mora, the speaker at the writing workshop, is an award-winning author of the young adult fiction novels “Becoming Sofia Bosco” and “The Sofia Bosco Effect”. Rosa Mora was able to guide students to freely explore the process of creative writing. Students were able to comfortably work with Rosa, regardless of whether or not they had any experience with writing before this. She also helped the students with the development of their own personal writing techniques, which we greatly appreciate and value at Creative BITS. We are thankful and honored that Rosa Mora was able to take time to work with our community’s youth in order to help with our mission of discovering, preserving, and sharing the stories of the Rio Grande Valley.

We hope this event will inspire new works of creativity, a love of literacy, and bring about a new generation of authors and creative talents in our community. Currently, we are focusing on fueling this nascent creative group by running a different program this fall.
